3 Phases of Real Change
The BLM movement needs to traverse 3 phases for positive change to occur… and nothing is obvious, simple, or inevitable.
Phase 1 Awareness
Improve visibility into what has and is happening (use statistics and anecdotal stories) to gauge reality. Be authentic, truthful, passionate, and patient.
Left -> viewing things as worse than they are (people watch people who watch anecdotal stories and ignore the data), and becoming dogmatic.
Right -> ignoring the reality of the emotional pain, and lacking empathy. Empathy comes first.
Phase 2 Laws and Regulations
Any laws that unfairly hurt impoverished communities need to be corrected (prison reform, police reform, gerrymandering, educational funding etc). The goal of this phase is fair and equal rules for the game.
Left -> let the pendulum go too far seeking “better than fair”, i.e. laws that favor certain people. This may ignite an unnecessary counterforce.
Right -> thinking Zero Sum and not realizing that a world with everyone flourishing and is a better world for all.
Phase 3 is Execution
Attention is here, rules are fair, now its time to put in work! Impoverished underserved communities have enormous potential and consumers are standing by. Let capitalism flourish. Investors and entrepreneurs build businesses, employing the locals.
Left -> playing “victim” role too long, missing the opportunity to build. Victimhood transcends to adventure. Right -> under-invest in the enormous economic opportunity with this emerging domestic market. Zero-sum transcends to abundance.
